Sciatic Pain

Electric shock like pain in the lwr back glute or leg. A sharp burning sensation in the same region. Pain radiating from your lower back into your glute. Pain solely running down your leg into your calf, these would be common symptoms of sciatic nerve compression

I had something similar a good few years back called Piriformis Syndrome. It was dreadful, I couldn’t walk properly and I couldn’t sit properly, I couldn’t even change the gears in my car without my left leg going into spasm, the pain was all that filled my thoughts.

The cause of this pain is the piriformis muscle in your glute is aggravating the sciatic nerve which lies beneath it. With me the issue lasted for around two weeks or so, I got treatment on it but I did specific exercises for it twice a day and it eventually subsided. I’ve experience with this condition (i’ll never forget it) and Ive plenty of sympathy for those who suffer with it.

WHAT CAUSES THIS:

Leading a sedentary lifestyle would be a major factory in creating stress to the spine. A large cohort of my clients who present with symptoms of sciatica all work in an office based environment. Another would be working in an occupation that requires you to carry heavy loads or work at awkward angles causing significant stress to the back. Other triggers can be age and the degeneration of the spine leading to nerve aggravation. Obesity is another, again carrying large amounts of bodyweight around causes a tremendous amount of stress to the spine in return triggering off the sciatic nerve.

WHAT CAN I DO:

LOADS is the simple answer. Look the pain can be excruciating, nerve pain is!! Be sensible with this. Get some pain killers into you even some anti inflammatorys to take the edge of this pain and then start looking for a solution. Pain killers wont be enough im afraid, you need to get the pressure off the spine which is causing all that bother to the nerve.

You guys know what I do. If you’ve been to me for Sciatic pain before you’ll know the drill. Its hands on treatment around the lwr half of the spine, the glute and we work on that leg as well. When I release the pressure off the spine I give you exercises to get strength back into that area. This is important to do as without doing the exercises you are creeping back into the same old pattern that got you here in the first place…..doing nothing!

STRENGTHEN YOUR BACK, STRENGTHEN YOUR GLUTES AND STRENGTHEN YOUR LEGS coupled with some manual treatment this is your path out of pain.
